Chakras: The Traditional Vedic Understanding

By Jonas Masetti

The word "chakra" has been adopted by Western culture and filled with meanings that have little to do with the original tradition. Crystal healing, color therapy, personality typing by chakra -- most of this is modern invention.

The traditional Vedic understanding is different. And more useful.

What chakras are

Chakra literally means "wheel" or "disc." In the yogic tradition, chakras are described as centers of prāṇa (vital energy) along the suṣumnā nāḍī (the central energy channel that runs along the spine).

The classical system describes seven main chakras:

  • Mūlādhāra -- base of the spine
  • Svādhiṣṭhāna -- lower abdomen
  • Maṇipūra -- solar plexus
  • Anāhata -- heart center
  • Viśuddha -- throat
  • Ājñā -- between the eyebrows
  • Sahasrāra -- crown of the head

What chakras are not

Chakras are not personality types. You are not "a heart chakra person" or "stuck in your root chakra." This is pop spirituality, not traditional teaching.

Chakras are also not buttons you press to activate abilities. No crystal on your forehead will "open your third eye."

The traditional context

In authentic yogic practice, chakras are part of the subtle body (sūkṣma śarīra) map used in specific prāṇāyāma and meditation practices. They are relevant to practitioners engaged in kuṇḍalinī yoga under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

For most people studying Vedānta, detailed chakra work is not the priority. The priority is self-knowledge -- understanding who you are beyond the subtle body and its energy centers.

Vedānta's perspective

From the standpoint of Vedānta, even the subtle body with its chakras is part of the non-self (anātman). Consciousness -- what you truly are -- is not located in any chakra. It is the reality in which the entire chakra system appears.

Understanding chakras can be part of a well-rounded spiritual education. But do not mistake the map of the energy body for the territory of self-knowledge. They operate at different levels.

The body has energy centers. You are not the body.
