Existential Crisis -- What Vedanta Says

By Jonas Masetti

If you are going through an existential crisis, I have two pieces of news: the bad one is that it hurts. The good one is that this pain is a sign of intelligence.

The Crisis as a Calling

An existential crisis is not a defect. It is natural intelligence perceiving that superficial answers no longer work. It is like growing up and realizing your clothes have become too small -- uncomfortable, but necessary.

What Is Happening

The questions arising -- about meaning, identity, purpose -- are the most important questions a human being can ask. Most people avoid them their entire lives. You are facing them.

What to Do

  • Do not flee from the discomfort -- it is directing you
  • Do not settle for easy answers -- if they were sufficient, you would not be here
  • Investigate -- with seriousness, with method, with guidance

Vedanta's Answer

Vedanta has existed for millennia to answer exactly these questions. Not with belief or faith, but with rigorous investigation into the nature of the self.

The central answer: you are limitless consciousness. Suffering is based on ignorance about yourself. And ignorance is resolved with knowledge -- not with experiences, rituals or positive affirmations.
