You want to meditate but do not know where to start. There is too much information, too many techniques, too many promises. Here is a straightforward guide based on the Vedic tradition.
Before you begin
Meditation is not about achieving a special state. It is training attention. Like going to the gym for the mind. Do not expect fireworks. Expect gradual, cumulative change.
The basics
### When
Morning is ideal. The mind is naturally calmer. But any consistent time works. Consistency matters more than timing.
### Where
A quiet spot where you will not be interrupted. It does not need to be special. A chair in a quiet room is fine.
### How long
Start with 5-10 minutes. Not 30. Not an hour. Five minutes, done consistently, beats an hour done once.
### Posture
Sit with spine straight -- chair, cushion, or bench. Not lying down (you will fall asleep). Not rigid (you will get tense). Upright and relaxed.
The technique
### Breath observation
- Close your eyes or soften your gaze
- Notice your natural breathing -- do not control it
- Feel the breath at the nostrils, chest, or abdomen
- When the mind wanders (it will), gently return to the breath
- No judgment. Just return.
That is it. The whole technique. Simple does not mean easy.
### What to expect
Week 1-2: You will realize how busy your mind is. This is not failure -- it is the first insight.
Month 1-3: You will start noticing thoughts more quickly when they arise. Return to breath becomes faster.
Month 3-6: Some sessions will feel genuinely calm. Others will still be busy. Both are fine.
6 months+: You will notice changes in daily life -- less reactivity, more presence, better sleep.
Common questions
"My mind will not stop thinking." It is not supposed to. The practice is noticing when you are thinking and gently returning. That IS the meditation.
"I fell asleep." Try sitting more upright. Or meditate at a different time when you are less tired.
"I do not feel anything special." Good. You are meditating, not seeking experiences. The benefits show up in daily life, not during the session.
"How long until I see results?" You are already seeing them. You sat down and paid attention. That is a result.
Beyond the basics
Once you have established a consistent practice (4-6 weeks minimum), you can explore: - Mantra meditation - Contemplative practices - Extended sessions - Study of meditation within Vedānta
But do not rush. Master the basics first. Five minutes of genuine attention is more valuable than an hour of restless sitting.
The one rule
Show up. Every day. Even when you do not feel like it. Especially when you do not feel like it. Consistency is the only thing that matters.
