Meditation is not one thing. There are dozens of different approaches, each with its own method, objective, and tradition.

The Main Types
### 1. Breath Awareness Meditation - Origin: Multiple traditions - Method: Observe the natural breath - For whom: Everyone, especially beginners - Duration: 5-30 minutes
### 2. Mindfulness - Origin: Buddhism (secularized by Kabat-Zinn) - Method: Attention on the present moment, without judgment - For whom: Those seeking stress reduction - Duration: 10-45 minutes
### 3. Mantra Meditation - Origin: Vedic tradition - Method: Repetition of a sacred sound or phrase - For whom: Those who get easily distracted - Duration: 15-30 minutes
### 4. Vipassana - Origin: Theravāda Buddhism - Method: Observation of bodily sensations - For whom: Committed practitioners - Duration: 30-60 minutes (retreats: 10+ hours/day)
### 5. Zazen - Origin: Zen Buddhism - Method: Sitting without purpose, "just being" - For whom: Those who appreciate radical simplicity - Duration: 25-40 minutes
### 6. Dhyānam (Vedānta) - Origin: Vedic tradition - Method: Directed contemplation on the nature of the self - For whom: Students of Vedānta - Duration: 15-30 minutes
How to Choose
There is no "best" type of meditation. There is what works for you. Try 2-3 approaches for at least 2 weeks each. The one you can maintain consistently is the best one.
