Mindfulness is everywhere: apps, books, corporate workshops. But what is it, really?

The Concept
Mindfulness (present-moment awareness) is the practice of being present, observing thoughts and sensations without judgment. It comes from the Buddhist tradition and was secularized by Jon Kabat-Zinn.
How It Is Practiced
The practice is surprisingly simple: 1. Choose something to observe (breathing, sensations, sounds) 2. Give it your full attention 3. When the mind wanders, notice and come back 4. No judgment -- not about the thoughts, not about your "performance"

Mindfulness vs. Vedanta
Mindfulness calms the mind and develops presence. Vedanta uses that calm mind to investigate the nature of the self. They are complementary.
Mindfulness asks: "What is happening now?" Vedanta asks: "Who is watching what happens?"
