Namaste became trendy in the West with yoga. But a lot of wrong interpretation came along with it. Let us clarify what it really is. Its Vedic origin. How to use it properly.

The Real Etymology
Ancient Sanskrit. Namaste (namaḥ + te). Two parts.
Namas: From "nam," to bow, to revere. Homage. Te: "To you."
So: "I bow to you." Simple respect.
Namaste in Vedic Literature
Over 4,000 years old. Rig Veda (8.75.10): namaste agna ojase. Atharvaveda (6.13.2). Taittiriya Samhita (2.6.11.2). Taittiriya Upanishad (1.1, 1.12): namaste vayo.

Ramayana, Mahabharata. Greeting to teachers, elders, deities. The Mahabharata begins with namaskrutya.
The Traditional Gesture: Anjali Mudra
Palms joined at the chest. Anjali Mudra.
Right hand: spiritual. Left: mundane ego. Union: integration.
Natya Shastra: for deities, at the forehead. For revered ones, at the face. For friends, at the chest.
Correct Use of Namaste
### Formal and Respectful Greeting
Hello or goodbye, formal. For guru, elders, deities, strangers.
### Expression of Gratitude
Sincere thanks.
### Devotional Practice
Namaskara in pujas. One of the 16 upacharas.
Misconceptions Created in the West
Yoga popularized it. But things got invented:
### New Age Interpretations Without Basis
"The God in me greets the God in you." "The light in me honors the light in you." Soul greets soul.
### Commercialization and Trivialization
"Namastay in bed." "Namaslay." Cultural appropriation that trivializes something sacred.
Pronunciation
Not "na-mas-TAY." It is "na-mas-teh."
Namaste in Modern Yoga
End of class? That is a Western invention. In India, it is used upon arrival. Teachers use it at the beginning.
The Authentic Vedic Perspective
Vedanta: dignity of the human being. Atman is the same in everyone. Recognizes unity.
But etymology stands: reverence to you. Depth in understanding.
How to Use Namaste Appropriately
- Appropriate context -- formal, respectful. Not casual
- Pronounce correctly -- Na-mas-teh
- Proper gesture -- palms at the heart. Bow the head slightly
- Sincere intention -- real reverence
The Importance of Cultural Preservation
Do not alter what you do not understand. The Vedic tradition is a complete system. Reality, life, realization.
Namaste is a door to an ancient civilization. Power in simplicity: reverence to you.
