The Truth About Duration
In the tradition, the value of meditation is not in duration. It is in the quality of attention. 5 minutes of genuinely present mind are worth more than 40 minutes of mind wandering while pretending to meditate.
A 5-Minute Practice
Here is a simple practice you can do anywhere:
Minute 1-2: Breathing Close your eyes. Breathe naturally. Just observe the breath coming in and going out. Do not control -- observe.
Minute 3-4: Observation Notice the sounds around you. Notice the sensations in your body. Notice the thoughts arising. Do not judge anything. Just be present.
Minute 5: Contemplation Ask yourself: who is observing all of this? Who is aware of the sounds, the sensations, the thoughts? Stay with this question without seeking an intellectual answer.
Why It Works
Because meditation is not the production of experience -- it is recognition of what is already present. The consciousness that observes does not need to be created. It is already here.
When you stop for 5 minutes and recognize this, all the agitation of the day gains perspective. You do not change the circumstances -- you change the relationship with them.
Habit Matters More Than Duration
Meditating 5 minutes every day creates a habit. The habit creates consistency. Consistency allows natural depth.
Do not wait until you have 30 free minutes to start. Start with what you have. The practice expands on its own when the taste develops.
