Reiki is a Japanese energy healing system created by Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century. It combines meditation, hand placement, and healing intention. But is it meditation? And does it work?

What Is Reiki Meditation
In Reiki practice, the practitioner connects with "universal energy" (rei = universal, ki = life energy) and channels it through the hands to themselves or another person.
Reiki meditation generally involves: - Visualization of symbols - Focus on breathing - Directed healing intention - Hands positioned at specific points on the body
What Vedānta Says
Vedānta recognizes the existence of prāṇa (life energy) and the subtle body. Practices that work with energy are not rejected -- they are recognized as potentially useful at the level of the subtle body.

However, Vedānta is clear: working with energy is preparation, not liberation. You can have the most balanced prāṇa in the world and still not know who you are.
The [self-knowledge](/blog/self-knowledge-vedanta) that Vedānta proposes is not energetic -- it is cognitive. It is knowing, with clarity, that you are limitless consciousness.
A Balanced Approach
If Reiki helps you relax and care for your body, use it. But do not confuse energetic wellbeing with [self-knowledge](/blog/what-is-vedanta). They are different layers of human experience. Reiki cares for the subtle body. Vedānta reveals who owns the body.
