Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1930-2015) was one of the greatest teachers of Vedānta in the 20th and 21st centuries. He founded the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam. He trained over 200 sannyāsīs who teach around the world. Traditional rigor with modern clarity. Vedānta made accessible without losing its essence.
The Early Years and the Search for Knowledge
Born Natarajan in 1930, Manjakkudi, Tamil Nadu. Brāhmaṇa family. Father died when he was 8. Responsibilities came early. Resilient from the start.
At 17, Chennai. Journalist at "Dharmika Hindu." Indian Air Force. Left after 6 months. "Nobody controls my mind. That is why I became a swami."
The Transformative Encounter with Swami Chinmayananda
1952. Chinmayananda's lectures touched something deep. Chinmaya Mission. Secretary in the first year.
Studied Sanskrit with P.S. Subramania Iyer. The Gītā method still used today.
Chinmayananda sent him to open a branch in Madurai. He did.
1955, Uttarakashi. Gītā manuscripts. Met Tapovan Maharaj, Chinmayananda's guru. Promised to return.
The Path to Sannyāsa and Deep Study
1961. Gudivada with Swami Pranavananda. Doubts resolved. "I saw him give direct knowledge. Vedānta is a pramāṇa, not a system."
