On September 11, 1893, at the Art Institute of Chicago, a young Bengali monk of barely 30 years took the stage at the Parliament of Religions and spoke the words that would echo through the centuries: "Sisters and brothers of America!" With this simple greeting, Swami Vivekananda not only won the hearts of the Western audience but inaugurated a new era in the global understanding of Vedānta and Hindu spirituality.


From Young Narendranath to Spiritual Revolutionary
Narendranath Dutta was born on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta. Family of a lawyer and a devout mother. A blend of tradition and Western education.
The turning point came with Sri Ramakrishna. The guru saw in him a vessel for Advaita. "Jīva is Śiva." The soul is divine.
The Journey of Discovery: Walking Across India
Ramakrishna died in 1886. Vivekananda walked across India for 7 years. He witnessed poverty, loss of cultural confidence.


He understood: spirituality must serve society. At Kanyakumari, a vision: India united, mission to the West.
The Parliament of Religions: A Revolution in Chicago
No credentials. John Henry Wright said: "The sun does not need to prove it shines."
September 11: "Sisters and brothers of America!" Standing ovation. He spoke of Vedic tolerance and universal acceptance.
Newspapers: the greatest figure at the Parliament. William James: an honor to humanity.
The Mission in the West
Two years in the USA. Vedanta Society in New York, 1894. He adapted Vedānta for Western understanding.
### The System of the Four Yogas
Karma, Bhakti, Rāja, Jñāna. For everyone. "Rāja Yoga" published in 1896. The foundation of modern yoga in the West.
### Travels to Europe
England. Met Margaret Noble (later Sister Nivedita) and Max Müller. Built an academic foundation for Vedānta.
The Founding of the Ramakrishna Mission
1897, returned to India as a hero. Lectures from Colombo to Almora: national pride restored.
May 1, 1897: Ramakrishna Mission founded. Motto: Ātmano mokṣārtham jagad-hitāya cha -- "For one's own liberation and for the welfare of the world."
Innovation in monasticism: monks engaged in social service. Hospitals, schools. "Service to man is service to God."
The Lasting Legacy
Vivekananda gave Hinduism a modern identity. "Unity in diversity." He influenced Gandhi, Bose, and generations of spiritual seekers.
He translated Vedānta into modern language. Spiritual plus social. Tolerance, service, divinity in all beings.
Vedanta Societies remain active worldwide. His relevance has only grown.
