Enlightenment is the most romanticized word in spirituality. Bright light, permanent ecstasy, optional levitation. The reality is much more sober -- and more accessible.

What Enlightenment Is NOT
- Not an altered state of consciousness
- Not permanent ecstasy
- Not disappearance of the ego
- Not a dramatic event with special effects
- Not reserved for monks in caves
What It Is, According to Vedanta
Enlightenment (moksa) is knowledge of yourself. It is knowing, with unshakable clarity, that you are atman -- limitless consciousness that is not born, does not die, and is not affected by anything.

It is not a new experience. It is understanding what has always been true.
How It Happens
Through sravana (listening to the teaching), manana (reflection), and nididhyasana (assimilation). With a qualified teacher, traditional method, and adequate preparation.
It is not instantaneous. It is gradual for most. But it is definitive -- once you know, you do not "un-know."
And After?
The "enlightened" person continues living normally. Works, eats, sleeps, can even get angry. The difference: knows that none of it touches who they really are.
It is not super-humanity. It is complete humanity.
