vairāgya

Qualifications

Natural dispassion toward transient objects

Vairāgya is the absence of emotional dependence on objects for happiness. It is not aversion or rejection, but the recognition that external objects cannot provide lasting completeness. It arises naturally when viveka matures — you realize that seeking happiness in the transient is like trying to hold water in your hands. True vairāgya allows you to enjoy the world without being enslaved by it.
