Śiva Pañcākṣarī Stotram
Śrī Ādi Śaṅkarācārya
नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय भस्माङ्गरागाय महेश्वराय ।नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै नकाराय नमः शिवाय ॥ १ ॥
Salutation to Him whose first syllable is NA — the spotless Lord, adorned with a serpent as necklace, with three eyes that behold past, present and future, clothed in sacred ash, the great God motionless at the center of the universe.
मन्दाकिनीसलिलचन्दनचर्चिताय नन्दीश्वरप्रमथनाथमहेश्वराय ।मन्दारमुख्यबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय तस्मै मकाराय नमः शिवाय ॥ २॥
Salutation to Him whose second syllable is MA — the Lord who destroys the ignorance of devotees, riding Nandī the sacred bull, attended by Gaṇeśa and Skanda, adorned with the crescent moon on his matted hair.
शिवाय गौरीवदनारविन्दसूर्याय दक्षाध्वरनाशकाय ।श्रीनीलकण्ठाय वृषध्वजाय तस्मै शिकाराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ३ ॥
Salutation to Him whose third syllable is ŚI — Śiva the pure, the auspicious, whose smile dissolves saṃsāra, whose dance (tāṇḍava) manifests the cosmic cycles of creation, sustenance and dissolution.
वसिष्ठकुम्भोद्भवगौतमार्यमुनीन्द्रदेवार्चितशेखराय ।चन्द्रार्कवैश्वानरलोचनाय तस्मै वकाराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ४ ॥
Salutation to Him whose fourth syllable is VĀ — the one whose hair holds Gaṅgā in her descent from heaven, whose third-eye glance consumed Kāma, whose presence is the abode of all realized yogīs.
यक्षस्वरूपाय जटाधराय पिनाकहस्ताय सनातनाय ।दिव्याय देवाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै यकाराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ५ ॥
Salutation to Him whose fifth syllable is YA — supreme Śiva, Lord of all beings (Paśupati), who grants immediate enlightenment to those who invoke him with devotion. One who recites these five syllables, Namaḥ Śivāya, attains Śiva's abode.
