Learn to Meditate: A Guide for Those Who Have Never Meditated

By Jonas Masetti

You want to learn to meditate but don't know where to start. You've read contradictory things, tried an app, and gave up after 3 days. That's normal. Let's simplify.

What You Need (Spoiler: Almost Nothing)

* A reasonably quiet place * 5 minutes of your day * Willingness to do nothing (harder than it looks)

You don't need a special cushion, incense, music, or specific clothing.

Your First Meditation (Now)

* Sit down – chair, floor, sofa. Keep your spine straight, hands in your lap. * Close your eyes – or leave them half-open. * Breathe normally – don't change anything. * Pay attention to your breath – feel the air entering and leaving your nose. * When your mind wanders (and it will) – notice it, without irritation, and return to your breath. * 5 minutes – use a timer if you wish.

Done. You have meditated.

What's Normal

* Restless mind – 100% normal, especially at the beginning. * Itching, restlessness – the body is unaccustomed to being still. * "I'm not doing anything" – exactly. That's the point. * Sleepiness – a sign that you are tired, not meditating wrong.

How Not to Give Up

* Meditate EVERY day, even for 2 minutes. * Don't judge your sessions – there's no such thing as a "bad meditation." * Don't expect mystical experiences – expect gradual calm. * Do it at the same time – habit beats motivation.

Next Steps

When 5 minutes become easy, increase to 10. Then 15. Learn prāṇāyāma to deepen your practice. Study meditation in Vedānta to go beyond relaxation. The path is open – just how to start meditating and don't stop.
