Episode 5 — Fine-Tuning: Is Retraining Possible?

BEGINNING — The process that changes the model without destroying it

In the AI industry, there is a process called *fine-tuning*. You take an already trained model — with all its patterns, biases, and tendencies — and retrain it with new, more specific, more targeted data. The original model is not destroyed. The base layers remain. But the surface patterns change. The model learns to respond differently while keeping its fundamental capacity intact.

Vedānta describes an analogous process — but it goes deeper.

The equivalent of fine-tuning in the human context has several names depending on the tradition. *Tapas* — the discipline that burns old saṃskāras. *Sādhana* — the consistent practice that creates new grooves. *Śravaṇa, manana, nididhyāsana* — listening to the teaching, reflecting on it, and meditating until it becomes the new natural response.

MIDDLE — It's not exchanging one conditioning for another

The crucial point: Vedānta does not propose exchanging one conditioning for another. It's not replacing "I am insufficient" with "I am incredible." That would be like fine-tuning a biased model with equally biased data in the opposite direction. The result is another bias, not clarity.

What Vedānta proposes is something more radical: seeing the entire mechanism. Realizing that you are not your saṃskāras. That the groove is not the ground. That the response pattern is not the one responding.

It's as if the LLM could look at itself and realize: "I am not my weights. The weights change with each fine-tuning. I am the architecture that allows any configuration of weights." Obviously, the LLM cannot do this — it lacks reflexive consciousness. But *you* can.

This is the fundamental difference between AI and consciousness — and it's why this analogy is so useful. AI shows you the mechanism with clinical clarity. But you can do something AI cannot: see yourself seeing. Observe your own conditioning as it operates. And in that seeing, begin to distinguish yourself from it.

MIDDLE (cont.) — The bias you don't know you have

The AI industry spends billions trying to identify and correct biases in models. It's an entire field of research — *AI bias*, *fairness*, *alignment*. And the constant conclusion is: the most dangerous biases are the ones nobody notices. The ones so embedded in the training data that they seem neutral.

When an automated recruitment model discriminates against women, it's not because someone programmed "reject women." It's because historical hiring data had that bias — and the model learned it. The bias was invisible in the data because it reflected the normalcy of the culture that generated that data.

With the human mind, it's the same thing. The most powerful saṃskāras are not the ones you know you have. They are the ones you don't even notice — because they seem "natural." "That's how things are." "Everyone thinks this way." "This is obvious."

When you react with anger to a situation and say "anyone would be angry" — that is a saṃskāra presenting itself as a universal truth. When you assume you need to be productive to have value — that is cultural training data presenting itself as fact.

AI at least has external engineers trying to identify its biases. Who identifies yours?

END — The question AI cannot ask

With each episode, the question becomes more personal. We started talking about technology, and now we're talking about you. And it's intentional. Because AI is the most honest mirror humanity has ever built.

But there's a difference that changes everything.

The LLM is trained by humans. Humans decide which data goes in, which is filtered, which responses are rewarded, and which are penalized. This process is called RLHF — *Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback*. Literally: reinforcement learning from human feedback.

Humans evaluate the model's responses and say: "this is good, this is bad." And the model adjusts its weights to produce more "good" responses and fewer "bad" ones.

The obvious question is: who decides what is "good"?

And this is not a technical question. It is an ethical question. Philosophical. Civilizational. It is the question that every culture, every religion, every philosophy has tried to answer since human beings began to think.

*Dharma and adharma. Right and wrong. Alignment.*
