Osho and Meditation: What Works and What Doesn't

By Jonas Masetti

Osho and meditation – a topic that divides opinions. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) was one of the most controversial spiritual masters of the 20th century, but his meditation techniques have spread worldwide.

Who was Osho

Rajneesh (1931-1990) was an Indian philosophy professor who became a spiritual leader. He was known for: - Active meditations – with movement, dance, catharsis - Provocative discourses – mixing humor, philosophy, and social criticism - Controversies – ostentatious wealth, scandal in Oregon (USA), deportation

Osho's Meditations

His most well-known techniques: - Dynamic Meditation – 5 phases: chaotic breathing, catharsis, jumping with "HU!", silence, dance - Kundalini – shaking, dancing, stillness, lying down - Nadabrahma – humming with hand movements

The premise: modern humans are so tense that they cannot simply sit and meditate. They first need to release accumulated energy.

The Vedanta Perspective

Vedanta respects all techniques that calm the mind – but makes a crucial distinction:

Experiences are not knowledge. Intense catharsis can provide temporary relief. Ecstatic dance can generate euphoria. But when the experience ends, you remain the same.

Vedanta does not seek altered states. It seeks permanent understanding of who you are.

Practical Use

If active meditations help you calm your mind, use them as preparation. But do not confuse them with the end of the path. Silent meditation and systematic study of Vedanta lead to something that no technique – however dynamic – can offer: self-knowledge.
