The Arrival of Vedānta in Brazil: Pioneers of the Tradition

### The First Seeds: The 1970s

The 1970s saw two key masters.

In 1973, Swami Chinmayananda visited Brazil. He gave lectures in Rio. Gloria Arieira listened. "It makes sense. A single cause," she said.

Chinmayananda: the first to teach traditional Vedānta in English.

### Traditional Training: Swami Dayananda Saraswati

Gloria studied with Dayananda from 1974-78 at Sandeepany Mumbai. The training was rigorous.

Dayananda emphasized knowledge as *pramāṇa* (means of valid knowledge) versus faith. It was rational.

### The First Steps in Teaching

In December 1978, Dayananda visited Brazil, giving classes in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In January 1979, Gloria began teaching.

There was resistance, often pitting Yoga against Vedānta. She remained faithful to the tradition.

### Building a Solid Tradition

For over 40 years, she has taught verse by verse, incorporating meditation, *pūjā*, epics, and retreats. She also produced Portuguese translations.

Her work inspired many to travel to India for further study.

Later, Paratparananda and Pareshananda continued the work. In 1999, Nirmalatmananda became a resident Swami, establishing an *āśrama* in São Paulo.
