What True Enlightenment Is

By Jonas Masetti

Enlightenment is not what you think. It is not a ray of light, it is not a cosmic experience, it is not floating above problems. In the Vedic tradition, enlightenment is simply knowing who you are.

The Myth of Enlightenment

Popular imagination has created a fanciful version: the enlightened one is someone who shines, who feels no pain, who has transcended the human condition. This is fiction.

In reality, enlightenment (mokṣa) is the resolution of confusion about oneself. You always thought you were limited — and you discover that you are not. Simple as that. Profound as that.

What Changes

A person with this knowledge: - Continues living normally — works, eats, sleeps, feels emotions - Is not confused by emotions — knows they are like waves in the ocean - Does not seek completeness outside — already recognizes oneself as complete - Acts with freedom — without compulsion, without fear, without dependence

What Does Not Change

  • The body continues to age
  • Practical problems continue to exist
  • Emotions continue to arise
  • The world does not become perfect

The difference is not in what happens, but in who knows what happens. The world does not change — you change. Or rather: you discover that you were never what you thought you were.

How to Get There

Enlightenment is not the destination of a journey. It is the removal of an error — the error of confusing oneself with the body-mind. This error is removed by knowledge, not by experience.

The path: systematic study of Vedānta with a qualified teacher, in the traditional lineage.
