Mental substance, the total mental field
Citta is the mental substance in its totality — the field where thoughts arise, impressions are stored, and experiences are processed. It includes manas (sensory mind), buddhi (intellect), ahaṅkāra (ego), and citta in the restricted sense (memory). In the Yoga Sūtra: 'Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ' — Yoga is the cessation of the modifications of citta. In Vedānta, citta is not consciousness itself, but a material instrument that reflects consciousness.
