Formal renunciation — exclusive dedication to self-knowledge
Sannyāsa is the stage of life (āśrama) dedicated exclusively to self-knowledge. The sannyāsī formally renounces social and ritual obligations to devote themselves entirely to the study of Vedānta. Sannyāsa is not escape from the world but the recognition that the ultimate goal of life (mokṣa) requires total commitment. The Bhagavad Gītā teaches that true renunciation is internal — renunciation of the sense of doership and of the fruits of action.
