Fundamental Concepts
Principle / reality — the essential nature of something
Tattva means literally 'the nature of that' — the essential principle or truth of something. In Sāṅkhya, there are 25 tattvas constituting reality. In Vedānta, the ultimate tattva is Brahman — and all teaching aims to reveal this tattva. Śaṅkara's Tattvabodha (Knowledge of Reality) is named thus because it exposes the fundamental principles of Vedānta in an introductory manner.
