Investigation — reflective examination of the nature of the self
Vicāra is the rational investigation into the nature of reality — the questioning 'who am I?' (ko'ham), 'what is real?'. It is the active component of manana (reflection). Vicāra in Vedānta is not abstract speculation but methodical examination using the tools provided by the Upaniṣads (such as the analysis of the three states, the five sheaths, and the cause-effect relationship). Vicāra dissolves doubts and solidifies understanding.
