Intellect — the faculty of determination and decision
Buddhi is the aspect of the antaḥkaraṇa that determines, decides, and understands. While manas questions ('what is this?'), buddhi decides ('this is a rope'). It is the subtlest faculty of the inner instrument, closest to the ātman. Therefore, it is in buddhi that the reflection of consciousness (cidābhāsa) manifests most clearly. A purified buddhi (śuddha-buddhi) is capable of assimilating the teaching of Vedānta.
