Vishvanatha · Ācārya · Padma Shri 2025
Jonas Masetti — also known by the traditional name Vishvanatha — is a Brazilian teacher of traditional Vedānta and a direct disciple of Swami Dayananda Saraswati. He teaches Vedānta, Sanskrit, mantras, and related topics of the Vedic tradition primarily in Brazil, where he resides.
His training as a teacher began after completing a multi-year residential course with Swami Dayananda at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Coimbatore, India — notably the last residential course personally conducted by the Swami before his passing in 2015.
His work is centred at Instituto Vishva Vidya, in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. He reaches tens of thousands of students through online classes, retreats known as Vedanta Camps, books, and the daily VedantaCast podcast.
Jonas was born in Rio de Janeiro. He has described his family as having Italian heritage and Brazilian indigenous ancestry, primarily from the Minas Gerais region.
Graduated in mechanical engineering from the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), in Rio de Janeiro, where he was also commissioned as an Army lieutenant. At age 21, he co-founded Morning Star Consulting, a financial market consultancy.
Began Vedānta studies in 2004 with Santosh Vallury, an Indian teacher living in Brazil. After two years, continued under Glória Arieira — pioneer of Vedānta and Sanskrit teaching in Brazil, awarded the Padma Shri herself in 2020.
In 2006 he met Swami Dayananda Saraswati during a study trip to the United States, at the ashram in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. He subsequently travelled to India for six-month intensive courses. In 2009, he entered a multi-year residential course with Swami Dayananda at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Coimbatore.
Throughout these years he also studied under Swami Sākṣātkṛtānanda Saraswati, Swami Paramārthānanda, Swami Tattvavidānanda, and Swami Viditātmānanda, completed his formation, and received the title of Ācārya in Vedānta.
Founded in 2014 in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Instituto Vishva Vidya has the mission of preserving the Vedic tradition and disseminating its message in Brazil and worldwide. It runs retreats and online classes on Vedānta, meditation, Sanskrit, mantras, and Vedic tradition.
The name Vishva Vidya — Sanskrit for “Universal Knowledge” — was chosen by Swami Dayananda himself when Jonas conceived with him, at the end of the residential course, the project of online teaching and intensive retreats.
In 2020, the institute began the construction of a Gurukulam in Petrópolis — not a school, but a residence where new teachers live as a family. Adjacent, on a separate plot, a cultural centre is being built to introduce visitors to Vedic culture.
India's Civilian Honour
On 27 May 2025, Ācārya Jonas Masetti received the Padma Shri from the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. India's fourth-highest civilian honour, awarded in the Literature & Education category for disseminating Vedānta and Vedic culture in Brazil and the wider West.

During the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, Prime Minister Modi met Ācārya Jonas in person and again praised his work in popularising Indian philosophy in Brazil.
Mann Ki Baat · Narendra Modi
In November 2020, on India's national radio program Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited Ācārya Jonas as an ambassador of Vedic culture in the Americas, highlighting the use of technology to popularise Vedānta, Sanskrit, and mantras to a Brazilian audience of over 150,000 students.
Petrópolis · Continuous operation
After completing the multi-year residential course at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam (Coimbatore, India) with Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Jonas founded Instituto Vishva Vidya in Petrópolis. The name — meaning "Universal Knowledge" in Sanskrit — was chosen by Swami Dayananda himself. In 2020, construction began on a local Gurukulam (residence for teachers) and a separate cultural centre.
