Fundamental Concepts
The manifest universe — all that is born, exists, and dissolves
Jagat is the manifest universe — everything that can be perceived, thought, or experienced. In Vedānta, jagat is not separate from Brahman; it is Brahman appearing as multiplicity through māyā. The analysis of jagat is central to the teaching: it is neither satyam (independently real) nor asat (non-existent), but mithyā — dependent on Brahman as its substratum. Understanding the ontological status of jagat is understanding the nature of māyā.
