Name and form — the structure of empirical manifestation
Nāma-rūpa is the pair 'name and form' that constitutes all manifestation. Brahman, manifesting the universe through māyā, projects nāma-rūpa upon itself — like clay appearing as pots of different shapes and names. The names and forms are mithyā (dependent), but the substance (Brahman) is satyam. The Chāndogya Upaniṣad uses this analysis to demonstrate that all diversity is merely nāma-rūpa upon a single basis.
