Causal body — the primordial ignorance that causes the other two bodies
Kāraṇa-śarīra is the causal body — identified with primordial ignorance (avidyā) that is the cause of the subtle and gross bodies. It is experienced in deep sleep (suṣupti), where only ignorance and causal bliss (ānandamaya-kośa) remain. The causal body is the deepest 'veil' over the ātman. It is destroyed by direct knowledge of Brahman (aparokṣa-jñāna).
