Fundamental Concepts
Great sentence — the central Upaniṣadic declarations on ātman-Brahman identity
Mahāvākyas are the four great sentences that distill the central teaching of Vedānta: (1) Prajñānaṃ brahma — consciousness is Brahman (Aitareya Up.), (2) Ahaṃ brahmāsmi — I am Brahman (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Up.), (3) Tat tvam asi — you are that (Chāndogya Up.), (4) Ayam ātmā brahma — this ātman is Brahman (Māṇḍūkya Up.). Each reveals from a different angle the non-duality.
