Instrument of the mind — sacred sound that leads to silence
Mantra literally means 'instrument of the mind'. It is not mechanical repetition — it is a sacred sound that, when used with understanding, leads the mind from agitation to silence. Vedic mantras are considered apauruṣeya (not created by humans) and carry the power of the knowledge they reveal. The praṇava Oṃ is the primordial mantra.
