Lineage — the unbroken chain of transmission of the teaching
Paramparā is the unbroken lineage of knowledge transmission from guru to śiṣya. In Vedānta, the teaching is not individually discovered but received from a living tradition. The lineage ensures fidelity to the original teaching of the Upaniṣads. The Advaita Vedānta tradition of Śaṅkarācārya has established paramparās in the four maṭhas (monasteries) founded by him at Śṛṅgerī, Dvārakā, Purī, and Jyotirmaṭh.
