Fundamental Concepts

Pure existence — that which simply is

Sat is pure existence, not dependent on anything else to be. In Vedānta, sat is one of the three aspects of Brahman: sat (existence), cit (consciousness), and ānanda (fullness). The Chāndogya Upaniṣad (6.2.1) teaches: 'sad eva saumya idam agra āsīt' — in the beginning, only existence was. Every object exists because it participates in sat, which is Brahman.
