Fundamental Concepts
Theory of appearance — the world is an appearance of Brahman
Vivartavāda is Advaita Vedānta's position on the relationship between Brahman and the world: the universe is an appearance (vivarta) of Brahman, not a real transformation (pariṇāma). Just as the snake appears in the rope without altering the rope, the world appears in Brahman without altering Brahman. This opposes pariṇāmavāda (real transformation) and āraṃbhavāda (creation of something new).
