The Teachings of Glória Arieira: Traditional Vedānta in Portuguese

By Jonas Masetti

Glória Arieira doesn't simplify Vedānta. She translates — in the deepest sense of the word. She takes the original Sanskrit text, the commentary of Śaṅkarācārya, and makes it accessible in Portuguese without losing precision.

What She Teaches

Glória's focus has always been on the foundational texts: Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā, Brahma Sūtras. She follows the tradition of Advaita Vedānta in the lineage of Śaṅkarācārya, transmitted by Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

Her approach is textual. She opens the Upaniṣad, reads the mantra, analyzes the Sanskrit words, consults Śaṅkara's bhāṣya (commentary), and explains. It's not free interpretation — it's translation with rigor.

How She Differentiates Herself

Glória brings a particular sensitivity to the Portuguese language. She faced a challenge that few understand: when she returned from India in 1978, after almost 5 years, she had learned everything in English and Sanskrit. She needed to create a technical vocabulary in Portuguese from scratch.

The terms she chose — to translate concepts like adhyāsa (superimposition), viveka (discernment), vairāgya (dispassion) — have become a reference in Brazil.

Classes and Structure

Glória teaches five classes a week at Vidya Mandir, in Rio de Janeiro. The classes are in-person and online. She has been teaching in Portugal for over 10 years. There are about 200 regular students.

The structure is traditional: the student listens, questions, reflects. It's not a quick course. It's continuous study, which can last for years. Because Vedānta is not information — it's transformation.

Published Works

Glória has translated and published: - Complete Bhagavad Gītā with commentaries - Principal Upaniṣads - Yoga Sūtras: "The Yoga That Leads to Wholeness" - Works by Swami Dayananda - Original texts: "Millennial Prayers", "Puja - The Realization of a Vedic Ritual"

The Legacy

Glória is training the next generation. Vitor Arieira Harres, her nephew, studied with her and spent 5 years in India with Dayananda. Today he is a teacher at Vidya Mandir. Other students like Henrique Castro and Fernanda Aboim also teach.

The seed that Glória planted in Brazil in the 70s has become a tree.
