Vidya Mandir: The Center of Vedānta Founded by Glória Arieira in Rio

By Jonas Masetti

In 1984, Glória Arieira founded Vidya Mandir in Rio de Janeiro. The name means "Temple of Knowledge." It's no exaggeration – that's what happens there.

What is Vidya Mandir

It is a center for the study of Vedānta, Sanskrit, and the Vedic tradition. It's not a temple in the common religious sense. It's a place where people go to study the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Brahma Sūtras – with the seriousness and method that the tradition demands.

The Foundation

Glória returned from India in the late 70s. She began teaching informally in Rio. In a short time, it became clear that she needed her own space. Vidya Mandir emerged from this need.

At the time, talking about Vedānta in Brazil was rare. What existed was yoga (in the sense of āsanas) and some currents of meditation. A center dedicated to the textual study of the Upaniṣads was absolutely pioneering.

How it Works Today

Classes are held in person and online. Glória teaches five classes a week. The curriculum follows the traditional texts in the order recommended by the tradition: Tattvabodha (introduction), Bhagavad Gītā, Upaniṣads, Brahma Sūtras.

Sanskrit is taught in parallel. Not as an end in itself, but as a tool to access the original texts.

Who Studies at Vidya Mandir

People from all backgrounds. What unites everyone is the fundamental question: Who am I? Vidya Mandir does not require religious affiliation, does not require prior belief, does not require experience with yoga or meditation.

Publications

Vidya Mandir has its own publishing house – Vidyamandir Editorial. Through it, fundamental translations have been released: the complete Bhagavad Gītā, Upaniṣads, works by Swami Dayananda, original texts by Glória.

These are reference publications. When someone wants to read an Upaniṣad in Portuguese with rigor, Vidya Mandir's editions are cited.

Portugal and Argentina

The reach of Vidya Mandir goes beyond Rio. Glória has been teaching in Portugal for over 10 years and has given courses in Argentina. Vedānta in Portuguese, which she helped to create, has crossed the ocean.
