Let's be direct: meditation does not cure cancer, it does not replace medicine, and it does not perform miracles. Whoever says so is lying or ignorant.

That said, meditation has real and measurable effects on health.

* Reduction of cortisol — the stress hormone, which when chronic impairs healing * Improvement of the immune system — studies show an increase in NK (natural killer) cells * Reduction of inflammation — regular meditation decreases inflammatory markers * Pain management — meditation changes the relationship with pain, reducing suffering * Improvement of sleep — essential for any healing process

How Meditation Helps in Healing

The body heals itself. This is a biological fact. Cut your finger, it heals. Break a bone, it mends. The body's intelligence does the work.

Meditation removes obstacles to natural healing: stress, tension, fear, anxiety. When these obstacles diminish, the body does its job better.

* Body relaxation — 5 minutes of scanning, relaxing each part * Conscious breathing — 5 minutes observing the natural breath * Gentle visualization — imagine health and vitality flowing through the body (without forcing) * Gratitude — thank your body for what it does for you daily

The Vedānta View

Vedānta does not promise physical healing. It offers something different: freedom from exclusive identification with the body. When you know you are more than the body, illness still needs treatment — but the panic about the illness diminishes. And this, in itself, is a form of healing.
