Night Meditation — How It Really Works

By Jonas Masetti

You can't sleep. The mind won't stop. Thoughts about the day, worries about tomorrow, anxiety for no apparent reason. And someone suggests: "meditate before bed."

But how to meditate if the mind won't stop?

The Common Mistake

Most "sleep meditations" online are just relaxations with soft music and a gentle voice. This can help you relax, but it's not meditation. It's sleep induction — which is useful, but different.

Real Meditation and Sleep

True meditation is not a technique for sleeping. It's an exercise of directed attention that, as a side effect, calms the mind enough for sleep to come naturally.

The most effective technique before bed:

Lie down comfortably — normal sleeping position Attention on the breath — just observe, without controlling Body scan — mentally go through each part of the body, relaxing Surrender — let go of control. Sleep is not something you do — it's something that happens

Why the Mind Won't Stop at Night

During the day, you're too busy to notice your thoughts. At night, without distraction, they appear in droves. It's not that the mind speeds up at night — it's that you finally notice what was happening all day.

The Long-Term Solution

Regular meditation — not just before bed, but as a daily practice — gradually reduces mental agitation. After a few weeks of consistent practice, sleep improves as a natural consequence.

It's not magic. It's attention training. And it works.
