Spiritual Discipline: How to Build a Daily Routine

By Jonas Masetti

Spiritual discipline has become a social media performance. Everyone wakes up at 5am, meditates for 2 hours, does yoga, takes a cold shower, and somehow stays productive all day. At least that's what they show on Instagram.

Reality is different. Authentic spiritual discipline isn't performance for others. It's sādhanā — systematic practice that transforms your ordinary life into a laboratory of self-knowledge.

It's not about being perfect. It's about being consistent. It's not about impressing. It's about growing.

What Is Sādhanā

Sādhanā comes from the root sādh — "to reach the goal." It's the set of practices that prepare the mind to receive knowledge of its true nature.

It's not empty ritual or authoritarian discipline. It's spiritual technology — methods tested for millennia that create the internal conditions for self-knowledge.

The Four Pillars of Vedic Discipline

### 1. Śama: Mental Tranquility

An agitated mind cannot investigate its own nature. It needs stability.

Daily practices: - Meditation: 20-30 minutes in the morning - Prāṇāyāma: Conscious breathing 5-10 minutes - Mantra japa: Mental repetition of sacred mantra - Silence: Periods without speaking or consuming information

### 2. Dama: Control of the Senses

The senses are like wild horses. Without direction, they take you anywhere.

Daily practices: - Intermittent fasting: Control over food - Moderation in consumption: TV, internet, social media - Brahmacarya: Conservation of sexual energy - Sleep discipline: Sleeping and waking at regular times

### 3. Śraddhā: Faith Based on Reason

It's not religious blindness. It's confidence in tradition based on study and experience.

Daily practices: - Svādhyāya: Study of scriptures - Satsaṅga: Company of wise people - Contemplation: Reflection on teachings - Questioning: Honest intellectual investigation

### 4. Mumukṣutva: Burning Desire for Liberation
