Dharma: What It Is and How to Find Yours
"Find your passion and follow it." "Discover your life purpose." "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
You've heard this before. The idea sounds appealing: there's something special you were born to do, and your job is to discover and follow this passion.
The Vedic concept of dharma is deeper and more practical than these modern versions of "life purpose."

Dharma: Cosmic Order and Natural Law
The word dharma comes from the Sanskrit root *√dhṛ*, which means "to sustain" or "to maintain." Dharma is that which sustains the order of the universe.
At the cosmic level, dharma is the natural law that governs everything. The sun rises in the east. Water flows downward. Seasons follow each other in order. This is dharma — the inherent intelligence that keeps creation functioning harmoniously.
At the human level, dharma is your role in maintaining this order. It's the contribution you can make to the harmony of the whole.
This doesn't mean you have a predetermined "special destiny." Given your capacities, circumstances, and historical moment, some ways of acting contribute to harmony and others generate discord.
Dharma is consistently choosing harmony.
Ṛta: The Fundamental Cosmic Order
Even before the concept of dharma, the Vedas speak of ṛta — the primordial cosmic order. Ṛta is the principle that keeps stars in their orbits, seasons in their cycles, and life in its complex interdependence.

Dharma is ṛta applied to conscious human life. It's how you, being free to choose, can align your choices with the greater order.
You're not isolated from the rest of creation. Your actions affect the whole, and the whole affects you. Dharma is acting with this understanding.
Sāmānya Dharma vs Viśeṣa Dharma
