Demerit — result of actions contrary to dharma
Pāpa is demerit or negative karmic result generated by actions violating dharma. It is not 'sin' in the Abrahamic sense (offense to God) but a natural consequence of actions dissonant with cosmic order (ṛta). Pāpa creates impurities in the mind that impede self-knowledge. Karma yoga and prāyaścitta (expiation) are means of purification.
