Direct perception — knowledge arising from sense-object contact
Pratyakṣa is knowledge arising from direct contact between the sense organs and their objects. It is the most fundamental pramāṇa — the basis upon which other means of knowledge operate. It includes both external perception (bāhya-pratyakṣa: seeing, hearing, touching) and internal perception (mānasa-pratyakṣa: perceiving emotions, thoughts). Pratyakṣa, however, cannot reveal Brahman — for Brahman is not an object of the senses.
