Turīya
तुरीयनपुंसकलिङ्ग (neuter) · चतुर् (catur — four) → तुरीय (turīya — the fourth)
turīya
Fundamental Concepts
The 'fourth' — consciousness that pervades and transcends the three states
Turīya is not a fourth state alongside the other three (waking, dreaming, sleep) — it is the ground-consciousness present in all of them, like the screen present in all scenes of a film. The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad (verse 7) describes turīya as: not turned inward nor outward, neither knower nor non-knower — pure, non-dual, peaceful. Turīya is another name for ātman/Brahman.
