Fundamental Concepts
Limiting adjunct that makes the unlimited appear limited
Upādhi is a conditioning adjunct that makes Brahman appear to be something limited. The body is an upādhi that makes infinite consciousness appear as 'I am this body'. The space inside a pot (ghaṭa-ākāśa) is limited by the pot, but space itself is one. When the upādhi is removed (through knowledge), the limitless nature reveals itself. Upādhis are provisional — they do not alter the real nature of Brahman.
