Devotional meditation — directed contemplation on an aspect of Īśvara
Upāsanā is a form of meditation prescribed by the Upaniṣads where the practitioner contemplates an aspect of Brahman/Īśvara continuously and devotionally. Unlike jñāna (direct knowledge), upāsanā is a mental activity that produces results (phala) — such as mental purification, spiritual merit, and elevated worlds after death (krama-mukti). Upāsanā prepares the mind for jñāna.
