Commentary — detailed and authoritative explanation of a root text
Bhāṣya is a detailed commentary on a root text (mūla-grantha). Unlike a ṭīkā (sub-commentary) or vārttika (supplementary notes), the bhāṣya explains every word and phrase of the original text, offering the authoritative interpretation of a school. Śaṅkara's bhāṣyas on the Upaniṣads, Brahma Sūtra, and Bhagavad Gītā are the foundational texts of Advaita Vedānta.
