The three foundations — the three textual sources of Vedānta
Prasthāna-traya are the three authoritative textual sources of Vedānta: (1) Upaniṣads (śruti-prasthāna), (2) Brahma Sūtras (nyāya-prasthāna), (3) Bhagavad Gītā (smṛti-prasthāna). Śaṅkara wrote commentaries (bhāṣya) on all three, and any ācārya of Vedānta must demonstrate competence in these three sources.
