The Veda as revelation — literally 'that which was heard'

Śruti refers to the Veda — the body of knowledge considered apauruṣeya (non-authored) by tradition. It is not a book written by someone, but eternal truths 'seen' (dṛṣṭa) by the ṛṣis in states of deep contemplation and transmitted orally. Śruti is the ultimate authority in Vedānta — when there is conflict between śruti and smṛti (secondary texts), śruti prevails. The Upaniṣads are the final portion (vedānta) of śruti.
