Qualifications
Control of the outer senses, sensory discipline
Dama is the second of the six virtues (śamādi ṣaṭka) in Vedānta. While śama is control of the inner mind, dama is mastery of the external senses — eyes, ears, tongue, skin, nose. It is not negation of pleasure, but the capacity for choice: the person with dama can feel attraction and choose not to act. It is the difference between automatic reactivity and conscious response.
