Latent impression — mental pattern formed by past experiences
Saṃskāra is a latent impression left in the mind by each experience, thought, or action. Accumulated saṃskāras form vāsanās (tendencies) that condition future perceptions and reactions. In Vedānta, even after the knowledge of Brahman, old saṃskāras may continue to operate — this is why nididhyāsana is necessary: to weaken saṃskāras contrary to knowledge until they lose their force.
